This is Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams’ first work together, and also the first time they play characters who challenge institutions, believes, and sexuality preconceptions. Weisz also acts as the producer of the film.
The two actresses play childhood friends who run into each other many years later. Together, they decide to keep a secret away from the conservative Jewish society: their relationship. They try to fight to stay together, but their passion may destroy each other’s life. Disobedience portrays two Jewish girls’ secret and dramatic love story. Weisz stars as Ronit, who goes back to London to attend her father’s funeral. After enjoying freedom away from home in New York, she grows anxious as Esti (Rachel McAdams) comes back into her life.
Esti’s husband, David, is the spiritual leader of their Jewish parish, and is also the favorite candidate to take over Ronit’s father position. As a married woman, Esti is forced to pick a side between her husband and her new lover, Ronit.
Disobedience was directed by Sebastian Lelio and adapted from Naomi Alderman’s novel of the same name and produced by Rachel Weiz. It has received plenty of praise after worldwide release.
